Working in partnership with Barnabas Counselling Training (BCT) we deliver a range of training courses to enable you to develop your knowledge and skills or work towards qualification as a counsellor ... and beyond.
BCT courses are accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and recognised by the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC). If you are hoping to qualify as a counsellor you will need to follow the progression route outlined below, unless you have completed relevant additional prior training.
- CSK-L2 Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
- CST-L3 Certificate in Counselling Studies
- TC-L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
We recognise that not everyone wants to qualify as a counsellor; many students choose to only undertake the initial levels, to better equip them for the caring and helping roles in which they work e.g. teachers, doctors, nurses, carers and church leaders etc.

- TM-L5 Intermediate Diploma in Counselling Supervision
CSK-L2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
This course will equip you to develop and practise counselling skills to enhance your communication with others, whether this be in a voluntary, employed or life situation. It will also help you to understand yourself and your relationships with others better. This level is also the first step in the journey towards qualifying as a counsellor.
On this course students explore topics such as self awareness, active listening skills, giving and receiving feedback, difference and diversity and features of safe practice.
This programme is delivered over 90 tutor contact hours; we normally run this over 12 full day sessions across an academic year. No previous training is required before starting this course. You will be required to complete ongoing written coursework and to undertake assessments throughout the course.

CST-L3 Certificate in Counselling Studies
This course follows on from the CSK-L2 and is for students who want to continue their training. This level focuses on helping you to further develop and practise your counselling skills. We introduce you to the 3 main schools of psychotherapy and consider how this enables us to better understand ourselves and others. You will also consider the issues that people experience in life and how counselling theory and practice can bring about positive change and growth.
Groups will explore topics such as the therapeutic relationship, the stages of the counselling relationship, mental health, working with difference and diversity and the importance of supervision.
This programme is delivered over 90 tutor contact hours; this is normally run over 12 full day sessions across an academic year. You must have completed the CSK-L2, or an equivalent programme, to be eligible to apply. You will be required to complete ongoing written coursework and to undertake assessments throughout the course.

TC-L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
This is the final stage in the journey to qualification as a counsellor. This level focuses on preparing you to work as a counsellor and pulls together the knowledge, skills and attitudes of an effective practitioner. Students explore counselling theory in depth to enable you to develop your own integrative approach to client work. You will expand and deepen your understanding of the 3 main schools of psychotherapy and also consider how you can integrate aspects of Gestalt, Attachment theory, TA and Transpersonal approaches.
Additional topics are taught, including supervision, ethical practice, research, a range of mental health issues and presentations, trauma, personal and professional development, working with difference and diversity and self care.
This programme is delivered across 2 years with 210 contact hours per year. This means that the group meet on a weekly basis for approximately 5 hours per session. You must have completed CSK-L2 and CST-L3, or an equivalent programme, to be eligible to apply. You will be required to complete ongoing written coursework and to undertake assessments throughout the course. Students are also required to complete a minimum of 100 supervised counselling hours and undertake 40 hours of personal therapy over the 2 years of the course.

TM-L5 Intermediate Diploma in Counselling Supervision
This course is aimed at those who have been practicing as counsellors for a minimum of two years and who wish to obtain a qualification to equip them for work as a supervisor. You will be introduced to the roles, responsibilities and qualities of an effective supervisor and consider the ethical, legal and moral issues that can arise in the work. You will explore different models, delving more deeply into Page and Woskett's Cyclical Model to provide a professional framework for your practice, whether this be in an agency or practice setting. The course also looks at spiritual and cross cultural dynamics and further explores the challenges of the work through teaching, discussion, role play and lively case study based learning.
The programme is delivered across 5 x 2 full day modules over a 6 month period. You must be a qualified counsellor with adequate post qualification experience, to be eligible to apply. You will be required to complete ongoing written coursework throughout the course and undertake a live assessment of your supervision practice. Students are also required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of counselling supervision during the period of the course.
